Warsaw was the launch point to take back all of the Soviet Union. It had the best airfields and a holdout civilian population still fighting.

It was a jewel.

“Warsaw will put us in striking range of other high-priority targets. Take it back and we can cut the horde apart,” Garin had told his officers back in Berlin. “But it’s big and Alice can’t take it alone. We’re moving in with full force.”

Alice didn’t care. She watched the tanks and trucks line up to head out as she put on her helmet. Infantry men saw her walking amongst them and hailed her.

“The Red Bitch of Berlin!”

There was excitement in the air. The kind of thrill when the enemy pushes your back against the wall and you begin to push back. Garin held up the trust of the men. He too was a patriot with battlefield wounds and a competent commander.

But with Alice in their ranks, the soldiers were fearless.

Alice returned to the officers command center as the ground troops headed off. She would follow them shortly in a dropship.

Garin greeted her as she entered. He took a moment to rub his synthetic jaw, the black skin weave tugging where it had bonded to his flesh.

Alice imagined it was painful. She remembered how it felt when they bonded her arm together.

Garin revealed nothing more than an annoying itch.

As Alice walked over to look at the vid screens and watched the troops speeding toward Warsaw, Garin came up next to her. When he spoke, his voice came out rough, a symptom of the new jaw.

“At this rate, we’ll soon be prepared to retake Moscow.”

Alice said nothing, only nodded.

“Can we count on you to stay with us for the duration?”

“Yes.” She still didn’t look away from the screens.

There was a pause before Garin spoke again. “Why do you stay with us?”

Alice shifted her gaze toward the general.

“I want to kill them. All of them.”

Garin stared back at her, as if he were trying to understand.

No one possibly could.

He nodded his head and spoke once more.

“We’ll see that you do.”
